Developing DNA-Based Ecological Classifications for Shallow Streams in Northeastern United States

چکیده

Several regions in the Unites States have developed algal bioassessment methods for wadeable streams (e.g. Maine, Connecticut). Algal communities and indicator species are correlated with land use, water chemistry, other watershed metrics to identify ecosystem indicators relevant local conditions. Taxonomic analysis has historically been performed by microscopic examination identification of within a sample. A pilot survey was conducted assess use DNA-based taxonomic bioassesments stream condition New Hampshire Maine northeastern United States. Algae samples were collected at 60 throughout region summer 2019. Samples sites included long term quality monitoring networks, allow comparison longer bioassesment data. extracted sequenced primers targeting 18S eukaryote species, rbcl diatoms, 12S fish. features parameters including nutrient concentration, historic Benthic IBI indices, metrics. Our results support previous studies indicating that molecular-based viable approach assessment. We found that: DNA-derived can be categories, indices from multiyear data reflected community. ratios, traditional categories. both effective amplifying target distinguishable community assemblages. Fish detected all sites, identified represent those likely present based on electro-fishing surveys.

Water Stress Projections for the Northeastern and Midwestern United States in 2060: Anthropogenic and Ecological Consequences

Future climate and land-use changes and growing human populations may reduce the abundance of water resources relative to anthropogenic and ecological needs in the Northeast and Midwest (U.S.). We used output from WaSSI, a water accounting model, to assess potential changes between 2010 and 2060 in (1) anthropogenic water stress for watersheds throughout the Northeast and Midwest and (2) native...

Mercury bioaccumulation in northern two-lined salamanders from streams in the northeastern United States.

Mercury (Hg) bioaccumulation in salamanders has received little attention despite widespread Hg contamination of aquatic ecosystems and worldwide amphibian declines. Here we report concentrations of methyl Hg (MeHg) and total Hg in larval northern two-lined salamanders (Eurycea bislineata bislineata) collected from streams in Acadia National Park (ANP), Maine, and Bear Brook Watershed, Maine (B...

Health System Reform in the United States

In 2010, the United States adopted its first-ever comprehensive set of health system reforms in the Affordable Care Act (ACA). Implementation of the law, though politically contentious and controversial, has now reached a stage where reversal of most elements of the law is no longer feasible. The controversial portions of the law that expand affordable health insurance coverage to most U.S. cit...

Developing a spatial framework of common ecological regions for the conterminous United States.

In 1996, nine federal agencies with mandates to inventory and manage the nation's land, water, and biological resources signed a memorandum of understanding entitled "Developing a Spatial Framework of Ecological Units of The United States." This spatial framework is the basis for interagency coordination and collaboration in the development of ecosystem management strategies. One of the objecti...
